New All-Electric Explorer Reveal
This launch was / is vital for Ford. Explorer is their major bet on a European designed and manufactured all-electric car.
Not only did this call for a totally different approach to an automotive reveal, it could not simply be a singular moment. The realtime technology integrated throughout ensured that an interactive virtual test drive would live on after the reveal film.
The reveal film sequence is made of different scenes featuring Lexie Limitless, a double world record holding adventurer. She introduces us to the new Explorer’s key features. The inspiration here is the Marvel film ‘Antman’ where she shrinks down to show us the quality and detail of the components that go into the new Explorer.
Multiple production methods were used. Green screen with CGI compositing were used for the shots where Lexie introduces the product features and where the car ‘builds’ around her.
A location shoot wasn’t an option as the car was a prototype. Therefore virtual production in an LED volume using Unreal Engine authored real-time content where used for shots where Lexie is driving through environments.

The reveal film seamlessly turned into an interactive virtual test drive using the same Unreal Engine assets.
Partnering with Pureweb to offer a realtime interactive experience using the same assets used in the reveal, we delivered a virtual test drive using pixel streaming technology to get potential customers behind the wheel of a car that didn’t exist yet.
When crafting the direction of the experience, this was never going to be an ordinary driving experience. The Explorer is a cross-over, not an off-roader so giving steering control wasn’t an option. Instead I pushed this into a cinematic style experience offering different camera angles, a choice of environments to explore, music to ride along to and easter eggs to find.
